Two Tips For Keeping Your Appliances Safe From Common Issues

Posted on: 25 June 2015

Keeping your home's large appliances in good condition can be a task that many homeowners overlook. Failing to properly maintain your appliances can severely reduce their performance, and it may lead to malfunctions. Sadly, some people may not know what preventative maintenance their appliances require. By following a couple of simple tips, you can help make sure that your appliances avoid a couple of common reasons for these problems developing.

Ensure Are Exhaust Vents Are Clean

There are many appliances that must need some type of vent to be able to function. Common examples of this is a furnace, dryer or stove exhaust. Without a working exhaust system, these units will overheat or be unable to vent fumes. Unfortunately, these systems will accumulate debris over the course of time, and if you fail to keep them clean, you may find that they will become clogged.

At least twice a year, you should inspect any vent covers in your home. When doing this, you should remove the cover and use a long sturdy wire to remove any lint or debris that has settled. Unfortunately, there may be times when you are unable to reach all of the debris in the exhaust vent, and if this happens, you may need to have a professional clean the vent to ensure a major clog does not develop.

Guard Against Electrical Surges

Damage from electrical surges and fluctuations can damage the electric components of many appliances, and as a result, it is important for you to protect these appliances from this problematic threat. The most effective way of doing this is by installing surge suppression system for either your entire house or each appliance.

Both of these systems divert excess electrical power into the ground using a long wire, but they go about this in a couple of ways. A whole house system is designed to prevent any electrical surges from making it into the home, and to achieve this level of protection, they are installed at the home's primary power connection. In contrast, individual surge protection systems must be installed at each outlet where an appliance will be located. Not surprisingly, this type of upgrade is more invasive and requires far more time to complete than installing a whole house unit.

Keeping your appliances safe from routine forms of damage can be a somewhat challenging task for individuals that have given this aspect of homeownership little thought. However, if you make it a point to keep any exhaust vents clean and protect your devices against electrical functions, you will be able to avoid two of the more common causes of damage to these devices.
